Recently we transported a MKIII (from out-of state) back to our shop that has significant damage when the wheel came off while the owner was driving. The good news.. he was only traveling about 10 mph while turning a corner when it happened. I'm sure we can all imagine what could have been a life threatening event had the car been traveling at normal speed. The not so good news.. it'll be rather expensive for the necessary body work to restore it to like new again. How many of us take time to check the safety wires on those cars that have them? Probably not many is our guess.. maybe adding this to your checklist before hitting the open road on that next fun run or cruise isn't such a bad idea, right? A couple of things to note here.. if the safety wires are wound too tight or too loose it can cause stress & tension, which could snap the wire. Although this particular MKIII isn't one of our Gear 6 build-outs.. we will be routinely inspecting saftey wires on every MKIII that comes thru our shop. View more images here.. |
